A trip down the AuSable River's South Branch is an unforgettable experience. During the course of your canoe voyage down this fabled stream you will pass sites of historic interest, you will see a variety of wildlife and you will be surrounded by some of the rarest natural beauty in all of Michigan. Come and enjoy one of Northern Michigan's favorite summer adventures on "The River of Sand!"
Your journey from Hiawatha Canoe Livery will follow the same route used by fur traders, lumberjacks, and Native Americans from days gone by. The gentle flowing currents will send you effortlessly down one of America's finest trout and canoeing streams. Expect the currents to move between 4 and 7 mph with an average depth between 2-4 feet, some holes can be as deep as 8 feet though, depending on water levels.
Take the time to enjoy the river wildlife which may include sightings of beaver, otter, muskrats, mink, deer, fox, rabbits, ducks, blue herons, kingfishers, and an increasing number of bald eagles.
Hiawatha Canoe Livery provides trips via canoe, one or two person kayak, and floating tubes. Cushions, personal floatation devices, paddles, and transportation are all included with your trips. To make your trip more enjoyable, you may want to bring a camera, snacks or a lunch, sun block, etc.
